THE THREE SISTERS
A print inspired by The Three Sisters chapter in Robin Wall Kimmerer's book 'Braiding Sweetgrass'. Robin describes companion planting sweetcorn, squash and runner beans "Native people speak of this gardening style as the Three Sisters. There are many stories of how they came to be, but they all share the understanding of these plants as women, sisters".
Sweet corn, squash and runner beans when planted together form a symbiotic relationship. The runner beans climb up the sweetcorn, gaining height and light whilst anchoring the shallow-rooted sweetcorn. The squash spread out around the base, keeping moisture in the soil. The runner beans take nitrogen from the atmosphere and convert it into usable nutrients to fuel the growth of the corn and squash too.
"Being among the sisters provides a visible manifestation of what a community can become when its members understand and share their gifts. In reciprocity, we fill our spirits as well as our bellies". - Robin Wall Kimmerer
